Mince pies ingredients

Only a couple of simple ingredients are needed to make mince pies, mincemeat and pastry.

You can make your own mincemeat if you have time or just do what we have done and add a few extra ingredients to improve the taste of the jar of mincemeat.

What is mincemeat?

Mincemeat is a mixture of dried fruit and spices, in 16th century England they used minced meat in mince pies.

You can make your own mincemeat if wanted however it can be a long process we like to use a jar of mincemeat.

Vegan and Vegetarian friendly recipe

Modern day shop bought jars of mincemeat almost always call for meat alternatives like solid vegetable fats making it vegetarian and vegan friendly.

And we use shop-bought puff pastry which also uses vegetable fats instead of butter.

How to add flavour to jar of mincemeat?

Shop bought mincemeat is usually sold in a glass jar, it is easier than making your own from scratch but can be a little lacking in flavour.

So we add some extra oomph to them using dried cranberries and zest and juice from a lemon.

You can use other dried fruits or fresh fruit such as apple works well. You can also use other citrus fruits such as clementine or orange zest.

Does mincemeat contain alcohol?

Shop-bought jar of mincemeat doesn't usually contain alcohol unless buying a posh one!

We like to add a splash of brandy to ours but this is optional! If you do add brandy don't add the lemon juice too as it will make the mixture too soggy!

What pastry is used for mince pies?

Traditional mince pies at Christmas time are made using shortcrust pastry, however, we love to use puff pastry for a delicious quick and easy flaky pastry sweet mince pie.

What puff pastry to use?

Ready rolled puff pastry is the quickest and easiest way to make these puff pastry mince pies we use the jus roll ready-rolled sheets of puff pastry.

A sheet of ready rolled puff pastry on brown parchment paper coated with flour

Of course, if you have time you can make your own rough puff pastry, you will want to make about 640 grams. Divide into 2 and use a rolling pin to make it into 2 sheets.

Although we use 2 sheets of puff pastry we normally separate this into 2 batches of 6 - 7 mince pies working on one sheet at a time to avoid the pastry getting too warm.

How to make mince pies with puff pastry?

Simply roll out the ready rolled pastry onto floured surface or baking paper dusted with flour to prevent sticking. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your pastry base and tops.

The key is to work as fast as you can to prevent the pastry from going soft. If it does become to soft to work with at any time pop it back in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm back up.

What size cutter?

We use a 7cm cutter, but depending on the puff pastry sheet and the size you want the mince pies you can use a bigger or smaller cutter.

And a tablespoon of mincemeat filling onto pastry bases, brush the edges around the mincemeat with water and top with another circle to make a lid.

Wet the lids with water and sprinkle with sugar then use a sharp knife to pierce a couple of holes in the top of each puff pastry mince pie.

Transfer the baking paper onto a baking tray before cooking.
